E.ON partners with Quinbrook for 230-MW Uskmouth BESS project in Wales

Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners, a global investment manager, has partnered with E.ON SE (ETR:EOAN), a German energy company, for the construction of a 230-MW/460-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at Uskmouth in south Wales.

The collaboration was announced on Tuesday. E.ON will acquire 50% of the project capacity and participate in its construction, which commenced in November 2023.

The BESS is currently being installed at the former Uskmouth coal-fired power plant site to support the transformation of the area into a sustainable energy park. Utilizing existing infrastructure such as the grid connection, industrial water supplies, and railway access, the project aims to minimize construction impacts, as highlighted by Quinbrook.

Having obtained the development rights from SIMEC Atlantis Energy Ltd (LON:SAE) in June 2022, Quinbrook has completed the permitting, design, and equipment procurement processes. The construction contractor for the project is Welsh civil engineering firm Jones Bros.

The Uskmouth BESS is scheduled to be operational by the first quarter of 2025.
