At its 2022 Reach Conference, Xylem recently honoured utilities and distributors who go above and above in the areas of customer service and community impact.
Water companies are being commended for raising the bar for customer service by promptly warning clients of potential domestic leaks or intervening to save homeowners from unmanageable repair costs.
Among the utility systems honoured at Xylem’s Reach Conference, held from October 9–12 in Washington, D.C., were those from Texas and Michigan.
“Our Reach award recipients deserve recognition for transforming their water utility operations, enhancing customer service and reaching supporting community members in need,” said Matthew Pine, Senior Vice President and President, Xylem Americas, Applied Water Systems and Measurement & Control Solutions.
“These local heroes leverage the power of digital solutions to address pressing water challenges, such as accessibility and affordability, and do so with efficiency, scalability and speed.”
Reach Transformation Award
The Reach Transformation Award recognises individuals who go farther by implementing Xylem technology to advance operations, enhance customer experience, and optimise data.
The 13th largest and one of the fastest expanding cities in the US is Fort Worth, Texas. In order to alter its systems, Fort Worth Water started its transformational journey in 2012.
The utility replaced more than 270,000 home water metres with distributor Aqua-assistance, Metric’s set up the Sensus FlexNet communication network, and continues to add thousands of new metres each year to accommodate its expanding population.
The utility is reducing water loss and improving customer satisfaction while realising significant annual cost savings.
“The MyH20 project is truly a game changer,” said Fort Worth’s Deputy Water Director Kara Shuror. “With our customer portal, residents now have access to detailed usage data, and they have the ability to monitor and manage their own water use.”

Reach Resiliency Award
The Reach Resiliency Award honours those that go above and above to modernise and respond quickly to emergencies in order to make their community a better place to live, work, and play.
There are 2,500 people living in the Michigann village of Mattawan. Four employees and a superintendent make up the small but mighty public works crew, which is constantly looking for new ways to increase productivity.
They installed iPERL home water metres and the two-way FlexNet technology for remote metre monitoring with distributor ETNA Supply Company, which enabled crews to complete a week’s worth of work in only a few hours.
The utility now saves around $75,000 annually because to the upgrade in technology, which also reduced water loss and overall expenditures.
Tom Anthony, director of public works, remarked, “That’s money we are not throwing away.” We were able to buy a bulk water station to fill swimming pools for homes thanks to the savings.
The award was accepted by Anthony and ETNA Account Manager Kevin Dieleman (right) to present to their teams.
