Transition Industries and Veolia Partner to Redefine Industrial Water Use at the Pacifico Mexinol Project in Mexico.

Transition Industries LLC, a frontrunner in projects aimed at achieving net-zero carbon emissions through methanol and hydrogen production, has partnered with Veolia Water Technologies & Solutions, a global leader in water technology, to enhance industrial water solutions for the Pacifico Mexinol project located in Sinaloa, Mexico.

Set to commence operations in 2028, Pacifico Mexinol is poised to be the largest independent ultra-low carbon chemical production facility globally, with a daily production capacity of 6,145 metric tons of methanol.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) between these two entities formalizes their collaboration to create a targeted water strategy for the Pacifico Mexinol project. This strategy, developed in cooperation with Ahome Municipality’s Drinking Water and Sewage Board (JAPAMA), aims to establish one of the largest instances of industrial water reuse sourced from municipal wastewater. The initiative will leverage Veolia’s advanced technologies to reduce environmental harm and promote local water conservation efforts.

This water strategy is designed to tackle regional water shortages by implementing a closed-loop system that treats and recycles municipal wastewater, rather than relying on freshwater sources. The system will comply with national regulations and is projected to prevent the discharge of over 8.5 million cubic meters of wastewater each year into the Bay of Ohuira, thereby safeguarding water for agricultural and community purposes.

As part of the agreement, Veolia will design and equip the water treatment facility for the project, incorporating state-of-the-art technologies such as ZeeWeed 500D™ ultrafiltration membranes, PROflex™ reverse osmosis membranes, and E-Cell™ electrodeionization. Veolia will also manage commissioning and startup operations to ensure peak efficiency.

Balmore Brito, the Project Director for Pacifico Mexinol and Head of Engineering and Technology at Transition Industries, stated: “Years of engaging with the community and local authorities have culminated in a set of targeted design solutions, including our wastewater strategy. Collaborating with Veolia, a global authority in water solutions, allows us to utilize technology to minimize adverse environmental impacts, which is central to our commitment to combat climate change and uphold environmental and social responsibility.”

Anne Le Guennec, Senior Executive VP for Worldwide Water Technologies at Veolia, remarked: “We are thrilled to collaborate with Transition Industries on this transformative project. Our top-tier water technologies and regeneration processes will facilitate sustainable methanol production, aiding in the acceleration of decarbonization and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, fully aligning with our GreenUP strategic program commitments.”

Transition Industries is working on the Pacifico Mexinol project in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group. Once operational in 2028, the project is expected to generate around 350,000 metric tons of green methanol and 1.8 million metric tons of blue methanol annually, utilizing natural gas with carbon capture technology to achieve ultra-low carbon emissions.
