Spain approves €22 billion to improve irrigation and the digitalization of the water cycle
According to EuropaPress, the Spanish government has allocated €22 billion for irrigation improvements and digitalization of the water cycle.
Nadia Calvio, First Vice President and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, stated during her speech that these resources will be accompanied by other initiatives to mitigate the effects of the countrywide drought.
Measures adopted on Thursday include direct state aid in excess of €636 million for the agricultural and animal sectors, as well as subsidies of up to 70% of the cost of insurance policies for the crops most impacted by the drought.
The economic impact of the agricultural sector measurements totals more than 784 million euros.
In addition to financial assistance for drought relief, the Spanish government is mobilizing 22 billion euros for irrigation and the PERTE initiative for the Digitalization of the Water Cycle.
This assistance will aid in the advancement of structural solutions “that allow for the best use of water resources and adaptation to climate change, which is already visibly affecting the nation.”
The absence of rain in Spain continues to erode reservoir water stocks across the country. Since records have been preserved, this is the seventh year with less water stored in reservoirs.
