Qatar’s Ashghal Has Succeeded in the Treatment and Reuse of 98% of Wastewater

Qatar’s Public Works Authority (Asghal) has announced that it has successfully treated and reused 98 percent of the nation’s wastewater, highlighting this achievement as a significant milestone in its water management strategy.

According to data shared on Asghal’s official X account, a total of 3.46 billion cubic meters of wastewater have been processed and repurposed so far. The authority noted that this initiative has transformed treated wastewater into valuable resources for irrigation, groundwater replenishment, and environmental preservation.

Asghal indicated that the treated water is distributed across four primary applications: 32 percent is used for irrigating green areas, 31 percent aids in the cultivation of fodder crops, 22 percent is injected into aquifers to restore groundwater supplies, and the remaining 14 percent is stored in seasonal lagoons for later use.

The authority also provided insights into the advancements made in enhancing Qatar’s drainage and sewage systems over the last ten years. From 2013 to 2025, the national drainage network expanded by 207 percent, increasing from 2,836 kilometers to 9,707 kilometers. Asghal reported that the existing infrastructure consists of eight wastewater treatment facilities, 13 treated sewage effluent (TSE) pumping stations, 71 groundwater and surface water pumping stations, and 120 foul sewer pumping stations. The network includes 3,326 kilometers of sewage lines, 2,084 kilometers of treated water distribution systems, 494 kilometers of rising main pipelines, and 911 kilometers of house connection networks, along with 165,924 surface water gullies and 79,348 drainage manholes.

Asghal emphasized that the combined growth of treatment capacity and drainage infrastructure is essential for supporting Qatar’s urban development while alleviating the strain on freshwater resources through the reuse of wastewater for landscaping, agriculture, and groundwater conservation.
