Calgon Carbon, a subsidiary of Kuraray, and American Water, the largest regulated water and wastewater utility in the U.S., have announced a nine-year exclusive supply agreement. Under this contract, Calgon Carbon will supply granular activated carbon, equipment, and reactivation services to over 50 American Water locations across ten states.
This collaboration will continue until 2033 and aims to address per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water, benefiting American Water customers nationwide.
“American Water is dedicated to safeguarding our customers and the communities we serve by adhering to or exceeding federal and local drinking water standards, including those set by the U.S. EPA regarding PFAS,” stated M. Susan Hardwick, Chief Executive Officer of American Water.
“Our alliance with Calgon Carbon is essential for ensuring that our facilities have the necessary equipment, supplies, and ongoing services to comply with current PFAS regulations in an environmentally responsible manner.”
Calgon Carbon’s unique reactivation process has demonstrated the ability to lower detectable PFAS compounds to nearly undetectable levels. This eco-friendly treatment method significantly cuts CO2 emissions compared to other options while minimizing waste through the reuse of activated carbon.
“Calgon Carbon and American Water share a common goal of eliminating PFAS and ensuring safe drinking water for people across the U.S. We are thrilled about this strategic partnership to provide our FILTRASORB® activated carbon and AquaKnight™ equipment to American Water as they address the PFAS issue and protect communities from these persistent chemicals,” said Jenalle Brewer, Senior Vice President of Drinking Water Solutions and Global Business Development. “We also commend their commitment to environmentally friendly and cost-effective reactivation services, which help keep spent carbon out of landfills.”
