ACWA Power, recognized as the largest private water desalination firm globally and a frontrunner in energy transition and green hydrogen innovation, has announced that its consortium with IC İÇTAŞ İNŞAAT SANAYİ VE TİCARET A.Ş. has been awarded the contract for the Caspian SWRO project by the Azerbaijani government.
This consortium will construct a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination facility with an approximate daily output of 300,000 cubic meters.
Situated in the Sumgayit Chemical Industrial Park, the plant aims to address the rising demand for drinking water in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula. ACWA Power was selected as the winning bidder after a competitive tender process, marking the first public-private partnership (PPP) initiative in Azerbaijan.
The project is set to span 27.5 years, after which the consortium will hand over management of the facility to the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency.
Marco Arcelli, Chief Executive Officer of ACWA Power, stated, “We are proud to secure this vital project in Azerbaijan, assisting the government in enhancing water supply and resilience to climate change. This achievement underscores ACWA Power’s competitive edge in the global desalination sector and reinforces our dedication to delivering sustainable and affordable drinking water to communities worldwide.”
Azerbaijan is focusing on improved water resource management to tackle water security issues, in line with its National Strategy on Efficient Use of Water Resources.
Since 2019, ACWA Power has been engaged in Azerbaijan, utilizing a public-private partnership model to attract foreign direct investment for significant infrastructure projects, including the 240 MW Absheron-Khizi wind farm.
