Wastewater management and treatment specialist Alpheus has officially started work under its contract to operate, maintain and improve the Mining Remediation Authority’s (MRA’s) water infrastructure.
Through Anglian Venture Holdings (AVH), part of the Anglian Water Group, Alpheus is now delivering continuous 24-hour operational services across the Mining Remediation Authority’s mine water treatment facilities, subsidence pumping stations and network of data monitoring locations.
The Mining Remediation Authority is a government organisation sponsored by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. Its role is to manage the environmental and safety impacts associated with the legacy of historical coal and metal mining, helping safeguard communities, property and the natural environment.

This joint effort has ensured a seamless transition into service delivery, with safety remaining our highest priority throughout the process.”
The eight-year contract, initially valued at £200m, will see Alpheus take responsibility for operational delivery at 82 mine water treatment schemes and 10 subsidence pumping stations operated by the Mining Remediation Authority. The company will also oversee the collection and management of information gathered from more than 700 monitoring points.
Under the terms of the agreement, more than 35 employees have transferred to Alpheus, bringing with them important local knowledge, established experience and specialist operational skills. Their contribution will help ensure the continued provision of high-quality services throughout England, Scotland and Wales.
Carl Banton, Chief Operations Director at the Mining Remediation Authority, said: “Throughout 2025 to 2026, we operated and maintained 82 mine water treatment schemes with the ability to process as much as 232 billion litres of mine water, helping to prevent pollution from reaching drinking water supplies, rivers and the sea. These treatment facilities play a significant role in safeguarding water resources, while also stopping 3,712 tonnes of iron annually from entering waterways across Great Britain.”

The partnership was first announced on 1st January 2026 and officially became operational on 1st July 2026, following a collaborative six-month mobilisation programme involving all parties.
