WEG was involved in the creation of the new desalination plant in Los Cabos, Mexico, providing a comprehensive suite of electrical, automation, and systems solutions for ACCIONA, a worldwide leader in sustainable water infrastructure.
This initiative marks a significant advancement in securing a reliable drinking water supply for the Cabo San Lucas area, which struggles to meet the water needs of its growing population. The facility will produce 250 liters of drinking water per second—equivalent to 21,600 m³ daily—addressing anticipated demand for the next two decades and serving over 464,000 residents.
Employing reverse osmosis technology, the system is engineered for optimal efficiency, dependability, and sustainability throughout the desalination process. The infrastructure also features a submarine outfall for returning brine to the ocean and an open intake system for seawater.
To fulfill the plant’s requirements, WEG delivered a wide range of integrated equipment and solutions, which included transformers, medium-voltage switchgear, motor control centers, electrical panels, automation systems, variable frequency drives, electric motors, and UPS systems.
The supplied equipment comprises:
8 substation transformers with ratings of 3,000, 500, and 250 kVA; 15 AIS medium-voltage switchgear units, model CCW07; 21 low-voltage distribution panels with capacities between 1,600 A and 4,000 A; 24 CCMX02 motor control center units; 7 Distributed Control System (DCS) panels; Panels featuring 95 variable frequency drives and soft starters; A 4,000 A busway for connecting the transformer to the distribution panel; 55 low-voltage motors; 3 UPS systems.
While this facility is smaller within the desalination sector, the project showcases WEG’s technical expertise in providing nearly all the electrical and automation infrastructure necessary for such critical applications.
This supply also represents the most extensive scope ever undertaken by WEG’s Automation and Systems division in Mexico, enhancing the company’s role in strategic infrastructure projects and solidifying its status as a global provider of comprehensive solutions for water, energy, and industrial automation.
Through this initiative, WEG reaffirms its dedication to technologies that promote sustainable development, broaden access to safe drinking water, and enhance the quality of life for communities.
