Toray opens research center to help India overcome water shortages

In Chennai, India, Toray Industries has inaugurated the Toray India Water Research Center.

In order to assist India in meeting future treatment demand growth and resolving its water deficit, the center will intensify research and development into applications for its water-treatment membrane technology.

The center is located at the IIT Madras Research Park (IITMRP), which promotes academic and industrial collaboration.

The center and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) will collaborate on research into sewage reuse techniques employing water-treatment membranes.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework of the Indian government has placed that university top for the previous four years, and it has a strong reputation in the field of water treatment.

Toray’s proposal for an energy-efficient water purification system with water-treatment membranes for sewage water reclamation in India was chosen in April 2021 for the SDGs Business Verification Survey with the Private Sector.

The choice was for the second SDGs Business Supporting Surveys project in fiscal 2020 from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Together, Toray’s new center and IITM will develop business strategies for showcasing an energy-efficient wastewater reuse and water purification system using water-treatment membranes, with an eye toward implementing such systems across India.

Toray will leverage the new center to boost its water treatment technology development capabilities and innovate products for local needs

Droughts, reservoirs and groundwater depletion affect about half of India.

Extreme water stress is experienced by 600 million individuals worldwide.

As the population and economy expand, this issue is likely to get worse; by 2030, water demand will have doubled the supply.

Around the country, initiatives to upgrade the water supply infrastructure and reuse wastewater have been sparked by the urgent need to address shortages.

Toray will take advantage of the new facility to strengthen its water treatment technology development skills and create solutions for regional demands in order to meet India’s rapidly increasing water treatment demand.

In parallel, Toray and IITM will work closely together on cooperative research and demonstration projects for wastewater reuse technology employing the firm’s water-treatment membranes.

They will spread the findings of these initiatives throughout India, assisting in addressing the country’s water constraints.

Toray’s new plant in India will collaborate with the August 2009-opened Toray Singapore Water Research Center to advance R&D and grow the company’s water-treatment operations in Southeast and South Asia.

Access to clean water is essential to the Toray Group Sustainability Vision, which serves as a road map for the world as the Group envisions it to be in 2050 and as an embodiment of the Group’s Toray Vision 2030, which aims to achieve sound, sustainable growth.

Toray will develop water treatment membrane systems to help solve the world’s water problems and bring about a circular economy as part of its commitment to developing ideas, technologies and products that add new value.
