Saudi-listed Marafiq joins $400mln Al Haer independent sewage treatment plant project.

The Saudi-listed utility company Marafiq is set to collaborate with the Miahona Company-BESIX consortium for the development of the Al Haer independent sewage treatment plant (ISTP) project in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The venture, valued at 1.5 billion Saudi riyals (approximately $400 million), will see Marafiq holding a 35% stake in the project company, while Miahona retains a 45% share.

The Miahona-BESIX consortium secured the contract with the Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC) in March 2024, after being selected as the preferred bidder in November 2023.

The project is expected to reach financial closure in the third quarter of 2024, with commercial operations commencing in the first quarter of 2027.

The initiative encompasses the construction and operation of a sewage treatment facility with a capacity of 200,000 cubic meters per day, which will operate on a Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) basis for a duration of 25 years.

Additionally, the project will feature a Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) re-use system, including a 32-kilometer transmission pipeline capable of handling 400,000 cubic meters per day, a TSE pumping station, and TSE reservoir tanks with a capacity of 200,000 cubic meters.
