Northumbrian Water selects Connexin to create new smart water network.

UK-based smart technology and digital provider Connexin has been chosen by Northumbrian Water, part of the Northumbrian Water Group, for its advanced water metering infrastructure (AMI) framework contract.

Connexin will oversee the supply and connectivity of over 900,000 smart meters throughout the North East of England, which serves a population of 2.7 million, including urban areas such as Tyneside, Wearside, and Teesside, as well as rural regions in Northumberland and County Durham.

This new AMI contract follows Northumbrian Water Limited’s recent partnership with Connexin to provide meter and data connectivity for a similar number of smart water meters in the South of England, specifically with Essex and Suffolk Water.

This solidifies the collaboration between Northumbrian Water Limited and Connexin across both supply regions, establishing Connexin as a leading end-to-end IoT solutions provider for smart metering in the water sector.

The implementation of Connexin’s low-powered, long-range LoRaWAN® network infrastructure will facilitate communication with the Head End System, transmitting data from smart water meters via the Connexin AMI network to enable near real-time analysis of reports from across the network.

By the end of 2029, Connexin aims to connect over 330,000 LoRaWAN-enabled water meters, with projections of exceeding 900,000 meters throughout the 15-year contract.

Gary Adams, Head of Smart Programme at Northumbrian Water, stated: “We are excited to initiate our smart water partnership with Connexin in the North East of England to foster a smarter, more connected, and sustainable future. This new communications network will allow us to gather real-time data across the region, helping us identify and address leaks more swiftly than ever, thus minimizing waste and protecting our environment.”

The Connexin network will aid Northumbrian Water in quickly detecting household and network leaks, significantly reducing water waste in the region. Additionally, it will grant households remote access to hourly water meter readings, enhancing visibility of usage and empowering customers to manage their bills effectively.

Dan Preece, Vice President of Water & Utilities at Connexin, remarked: “We are delighted that Northumbrian Water has chosen Connexin for the AMI smart water meter rollout in the North East, building on our successful existing relationship with the group. This further establishes Connexin as the ideal partner for IoT-driven water initiatives, and we look forward to leveraging our expertise to double the number of smart water meters across both regions.”

The agreement with Northumbrian Water marks Connexin’s fourth major smart water meter contract, following wins with Yorkshire Water, Severn Trent Water, and Essex and Suffolk Water.

This positions Connexin to have the most extensive IoT LoRaWAN network in the UK, enabling cities, towns, and businesses to advance their adoption of smart technologies to enhance daily living.

This summer, Connexin will sponsor Northumbrian Water’s Innovation Festival to collaboratively develop solutions that support individuals needing care to live independently in their homes for longer.

Additionally, Connexin will host a session at the Young Citizen’s Work Experience Festival to inspire Year 9 students about the potential of technology and data for a smarter future.
