MASEN has shortlisted six consortia to build Morocco’s next CSP project at Midelt

Morocco is poised to award a new contract for the construction of a hybrid solar power plant in the Atlas Mountains city of Midelt. The Noor Midelt II project is part of the country’s ambitious aim to enhance renewable energy generation and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

According to Morocco World News, the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) has selected six consortia for the final bidding round of the 400 MW project. ACWA Power, Grupo Cobra, EDF Renouvelables, International Power, Iberdrola Renovables International, and Enel Green Power lead the consortium. These companies have met all of MASEN’s criteria and have been chosen for their vast experience in the energy sector, particularly in the field of renewable energy.

Noor Midelt II is the second phase of the Noor Midelt complex, which intends to combine concentrated solar power (CSP) and photovoltaic (PV) technologies with the ability to supply continuously even when solar radiation is low or at night.

Renewable energy will account for 40% of total installed capacity in the country by March 2023, with the target of reaching 52% by then. Renewable energies will account for 18% of the kingdom’s electricity output in 2022, compared to 72% for coal energy production. The country boasts an abundance of solar, wind, and hydraulic resources, which it has heavily invested in developing. Morocco wants to be a regional energy hub, supplying clean electricity to Europe and Africa.

Morocco’s solar energy programmes assist social development, the environment, and the economy. The projects, according to MASEN, have created and will create thousands of employment, improved local infrastructure, and supported educational and health programmes.

Morocco has established itself as a global pioneer in the development of solar energy projects, allowing it to restructure its energy grid, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and boost socioeconomic growth. Morocco’s solar energy projects are a brilliant and pioneering example of how renewable energy can be an effective and sustainable answer to climate change and the global energy transition concerns.

According to Morocco World News, the company picked for the award of this new contract for the repair of the solar plant will be announced soon.
