Fisia Italimpianti (Webuild Group) awarded $439m water treatment plant contracts in Saudi Arabia
Fisia Italimpianti, a Webuild Group subsidiary and global leader in water treatment and desalination plant construction and management, has won two contracts totaling €408 million ($439 million) for the construction and management of a water treatment plant for the ZULUF onshore oil facilities in Saudi Arabia.
The contracts signal Fisia Italimpianti’s return to the water sector’s operation and maintenance segment as well as its entry into the oil and gas business. The project improves Webuild’s position in the water industry, where it plans to expand as part of its newly announced 2023-2025 strategic plan.
The first contract, a $327 million Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract owned entirely by Fisia Italimpianti, includes the construction of a plant for the ZULUF Central Processing Facilities, which is required for the onshore structures.
The project is part of Aramco’s Arab Heavy (AH) Crude Oil Increment of the ZULUF field development program. It will be built for Aramco by a consortium comprising of Almar Water Solutions and Aljomaih Energy and Water Co Ltd. in eastern Saudi Arabia, roughly 6 kilometers west of Tanajib’s airport.
Fisia Italimpianti has won two contracts worth a combined value of €408 million ($439 million)
Fisia Italimpianti will construct the plant, which will have a maximum production capacity of 185,000 cubic metres per day and will treat, degas, and filter water for iron and suspended particulates.
By maintaining pressure in the wells, the plant will reinject water into the oil wells, facilitating the production of Arab Heavy crude oil. The project will take three years to complete and will generate roughly 1,500 direct and indirect jobs.
The second contract, at $112 million, covers the operation and maintenance of the completed plant for 25 years, with Fisia Italimpianti owning a 20% stake in a joint venture with Almar Water Solutions, Aljomaih Energy and Water Co Ltd, and Aquatech International.
Fisia Italimpianti has a lengthy history in the Middle East, having developed desalination and water treatment plants in the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain. Its plants offer drinkable water to more than 20 million people worldwide.
