Aker Solutions secures contract to upgrade Equinor’s Mongstad refinery.

Aker Solutions, a prominent player in the energy industry, has been awarded a significant EPCIC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation, and Commissioning) contract by Equinor to enhance the wastewater treatment plant facilities at the Mongstad refinery on the west coast of Norway.

This project aims to reduce the environmental impact of the refinery’s operations. The Mongstad refinery, located 70 km north of Bergen, is closely integrated with an oil terminal connected to multiple North Sea oilfields and interfaces with crude tankers docked at the port.

The refinery’s wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is responsible for treating water from the refinery, offsite sources, and the oil terminal.

As an integral part of Norway’s oil and gas distribution network, the Mongstad refinery plays a crucial role with a long production horizon ahead.

Paal Eikeseth, the executive vice president and head of Aker Solutions’ Life Cycle segment, commented, “Equinor’s goal to significantly reduce emissions from the Mongstad refinery aligns with our aim to enable our customers to enhance efficiency, minimize emissions, and ensure safe and responsible production.”

Under the EPCIC contract, Aker Solutions will be responsible for project management, engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning work.

The company’s engineering office in Bergen will serve as the main hub for project management, engineering, and procurement, while the Mumbai office will contribute to the engineering efforts.

Prefabrication and assembly work will be carried out at the Egersund yard, and the Stord yard will provide construction personnel to the Mongstad site. At the project’s peak, it is expected to employ over 500 individuals.

Additionally, Aker Solutions had previously announced another contract award by Equinor to conduct a feasibility study for the Mongstad Industrial Transformation project.

The current project is set to commence immediately and is anticipated to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2026. The contract will be recorded as order intake in the second quarter of 2024 in the Life Cycle segment.
