Acwa Power achieves full commercial operation at Taweelah RO desalination plant.

Acwa Power, a Saudi developer of power and water utilities infrastructure, recently marked a significant achievement at the Taweelah RO (Reverse Osmosis) plant in Abu Dhabi.

The Taweelah RO Desalination Company, where Acwa Power has a 40% stake, has obtained the commercial operation certificate for the final phase of the plant from Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC).

“Marco Arcelli, the CEO of Acwa Power, expressed his congratulations to our team, led by Jan De Vrij and Patxi Saez, for successfully achieving project commercial operation at the TaweelahRO water desalination plant. The plant has a capacity of 909,200 cubic meters per day and is complemented by a 70 MW captive PV plant, enhancing the sustainability and eco-friendliness of the water production process.

This significant milestone was accomplished through a strong collaborative effort with our partners POWERCHINA SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd., Abengoa S.A., Toray Industries, Inc., Siemens, and Flowserve Corporation.”

The project was conceived to address the increasing water demands of the region by leveraging advanced desalination technologies to provide a sustainable source of potable water for Abu Dhabi and beyond. Acwa Power and its partners adopted a phased development approach, ensuring meticulous planning and timely delivery of critical infrastructure to meet the region’s needs.

The project’s phased development included Group 1 with a capacity of 454,609 cubic meters per day starting operations in mid-2022, followed by Group 2 with a capacity of 378,689 cubic meters per day in April of the following year.

The recent acquisition of the commercial operations certificate for Group 3, with a capacity of 75,920 cubic meters per day, marks the full commercial operation of the Taweelah RO Desalination project, totaling 909,218 cubic meters per day.

Acwa Power’s achievement not only demonstrates its leadership in the industry but also showcases its commitment to addressing the water and electricity needs of the region.

The financial impact of this milestone is expected to be seen from the second quarter of 2024 onwards.
