ScottishPower Energy Networks, part of Iberdrola’s UK operations, has awarded a £110 million contract to M Group as part of a major project to modernize Scotland’s electricity infrastructure.
The project will upgrade more than 70 kilometers of electricity transmission lines between Strathaven in South Lanarkshire and Smeaton in East Lothian, one of the key electricity corridors connecting Glasgow and Edinburgh.
The investment is designed to strengthen and modernize the electricity network across southern Scotland, much of which dates back to the 1960s. The upgrades will help improve the resilience and efficiency of the network while increasing its capacity to meet the growing demands of the future energy system.
The project is also expected to generate around 1,000 direct jobs, in addition to tens of thousands of employment opportunities supported through the wider supply chain, providing a significant boost to local economies.
The investment forms part of ScottishPower’s wider commitment to invest approximately £24 billion across the UK by 2028, including a £12 billion program to upgrade and expand the electricity transmission network across central and southern Scotland.
The latest project highlights the growing need to modernize electricity infrastructure as the energy sector undergoes a rapid transition. By upgrading key transmission assets, ScottishPower aims to build a more resilient network capable of supporting increasing electricity demand and the integration of new renewable energy capacity.
