Companhia Espirito Santense de Saneamento (CESAN) has granted ACCIONA the contract for urban sanitation services across eight municipalities in the state of Espirito Santo, located in southeastern Brazil. This initiative involves wastewater treatment and commercial management support, benefiting approximately 250,000 residents in these municipalities, with an anticipated investment of R$540 million (€85 million) over a 23-year period.
The agreement is established as a public-private partnership, functioning as an administrative concession for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the project. It is fully compliant with the EU taxonomy for sustainable activities, facilitating the shift towards a low-carbon economy. The government of Espirito Santo aims to enhance access to sanitary sewer services in these municipalities, targeting 90% coverage by 2033.
Under this contract, ACCIONA will construct four wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), 65 pumping stations, and a network of 320 kilometers of water collection pipes. ACCIONA has been active in Brazil for over 25 years, during which it has undertaken several significant infrastructure projects, including Terminal 2 at Porto do Açu in Rio de Janeiro and the redevelopment of the historic Júlio Prestes train station in São Paulo into a premier concert venue.
One of its major contracts in Brazil, and among the largest infrastructure endeavors in Latin America, is the construction of Line 6 of the São Paulo subway, which involves an investment exceeding R$19 billion (€1.97 billion). This line will link Brasilândia in northern São Paulo to the São Joaquim station in the city center, significantly reducing travel time from approximately 90 minutes by bus to just 23 minutes.
ACCIONA has extensive experience in sanitation and water treatment projects in Brazil, including the sanitation system in the Alcântara basin in São Gonçalo, the state’s second-largest city. This project involved pipe networks, water collection tanks, pumping stations, and WWTPs. Additionally, the company has designed, constructed, and provided operational support for the wastewater treatment system in Santa Cruz do Capibaribe in the northeastern Pernambuco region. Furthermore, it has implemented, operated, and maintained the cogeneration system at the Arrudas WWTP in Minas Gerais.
In January 2025, Sanepar (the Paraná Sanitation Company) awarded ACCIONA a contract for sanitary sewer services in 48 municipalities across the western and central-eastern microregions of Paraná, which will enhance health and quality of life for a population of 252,000 by 2033.
