ACCIONA will renovate one of London’s main water treatment plants

ACCIONA will renovate the Coppermills Water Treatment Plant, which currently supplies one-third of the drinking water to the Greater London area. The company will handle the design, construction, and commissioning of the infrastructure. Upon completion, the plant will be handed over to the client, Thames Water, a private company responsible for providing water to most of London.

A total investment of £400 million (€465 million) will be made to enhance the plant’s reliability and meet the drinking water needs of the growing population.

Situated in the Lea Valley, Coppermills treats and delivers clean water to Greater London, encompassing 32 municipalities around the capital, as well as the City, its historic center.

The existing 60-year-old plant is in need of modernization. With Jacobs serving as the lead designer, ACCIONA will construct a new pumping station, implement a new filtration and treatment system to ensure high water quality, and upgrade the facility’s electrical supply systems.

Local Experience

ACCIONA has been operating in the UK since 2003. In early 2022, the North London Waste Authority awarded ACCIONA a turnkey contract to develop the Edmonton EcoPark waste-to-energy plant in North London, which has a treatment capacity of 700,000 tons annually and can supply electricity and heating to 50,000 homes.

In 2019, ACCIONA was awarded the construction and operation of a similar plant in Aberdeen, Scotland, known as the NESS Energy Project, which has a treatment capacity of 150,000 tons annually.
