Water Services Corporation, responsible for managing the entire drinking water and wastewater systems in the Maltese Islands, has awarded SUEZ a new five-year contract to oversee the smart metering service for water consumption across the archipelago. This contract extends their long-standing partnership until 2029 and implements the ON’connect™ digital solution, which utilizes WIZE technology.
With over 2 million tourists annually, significantly increasing its population, the Maltese Archipelago faces demographic pressures in a Mediterranean climate, necessitating stringent water resource management. Recognizing these challenges, Water Services Corporation began investing in the nationwide rollout of smart water meters back in 2009.
To date, more than 310,000 smart meters have been installed throughout the archipelago, achieving over 96% coverage and providing valuable data collected and processed via SUEZ’s ON’connect™ solution through its Digital Solutions subsidiary.
Through ON’connect™, residents across the Maltese Islands can monitor their water usage and receive alerts via a dedicated Customer Portal managed by Water Services Corporation. Nearly 3,500 notifications are sent each month to warn customers of unusual consumption patterns, helping them lower their bills and conserve water.
Additionally, Water Services Corporation can enhance the performance of the water network, respond to issues, and minimize leaks. The data gathered also aids in boosting the operator’s operational, commercial, and environmental efficiency by significantly cutting down Non-Revenue Water.
Karl Cilia, CEO of Water Services Corporation, stated: “This renewed partnership with SUEZ highlights the benefits that smart metering brings to our operations and customers. We have witnessed notable improvements in efficiency and service delivery, enabling us to proactively manage our water resources while enhancing customer service and tackling the critical issue of water conservation in Malta.”
Patricia Villoslada, SVP of SUEZ Digital Solutions, remarked: “We are thrilled and proud to extend our long-term collaboration with Water Services Corporation, whose renewed confidence affirms the quality and effectiveness of our smart metering service. Since our initial pilot in 2009, our solution has consistently improved the efficiency of our client’s network and service, positioning Malta as a leader in smart water management and sustainable water conservation.”
