Solar-Powered Wells: Saudi Arabia And Civil Society Join Forces For Yemen’s Water Project

Saudi Arabia, through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, has finalized a collaborative agreement with a civil society organization to execute a water well project in Yemen. The effort intends to dig and develop wells in Hadhramaut’s Coast and Valley District, Hodeidah’s Al-Khawkha District, and Shabwa’s Bir Ali area.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Muallem, Director of the Center’s Health and Environmental Aid Department, explained the agreement’s components. The proposal calls for drilling and installing eight additional wells, interconnected with solar energy systems and outfitted with 5-meter-high tanks to assure uninterrupted water delivery.
A tower tank in Al-Khawkha District and a surface tank in Rudum District are among the additional facilities being built.

The agreement includes rehabilitating nine existing wells in Hadramaut and Hodeidah, connecting them to solar energy systems, and installing 5-meter-high tanks.

It also involves capacity-building activities for Water Corporation employees, with 34 people receiving training in field installation and maintenance work.
The installation of well components, accessories, and solar energy systems is estimated to directly benefit 65,300 individuals. This collaborative endeavour underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to aiding the water and environmental sanitation sectors, which will help to alleviate Yemen’s humanitarian situation.
