Hynion Signs Agreement With OKG to Secure Hydrogen Supply

OKG, which is owned by Uniper, has signed an agreement with Hynion to deliver hydrogen from its Oskarshamn hydrogen plant. Hynion works with another supplier to secure hydrogen availability and prepare for an increase in hydrogen-powered traffic in Sweden. Hynion is now taking a major step by naming OKG as one of its hydrogen suppliers. This relationship is a key aspect of Hynion’s effort to lessen its reliance on individual suppliers.

Uniper, the multinational energy business that owns OKG, has a significant presence in more than 40 countries and is Sweden’s top electricity generator. Uniper’s facilities, which include fossil-free hydropower and nuclear power, are critical to ensuring energy security and accelerating the energy revolution.

The hydrogen that Hynion will use is produced at OKG’s nuclear power plant, where Oskarshamn 3 (O3), one of the world’s largest boiling water reactors, generated 9.2 TWh of carbon-free electricity in 2023, equivalent to 6.8 % of Sweden’s total electricity consumption.

“We are very grateful for this collaboration. We need stable producers who, together with us at Hynion, want to contribute to the energy transition and a carbon-free future. The hydrogen delivery from OKG is an important step to secure the supply of hydrogen at our stations,” says Slavica Djuric, CEO of Hynion AS.

“It is fantastic that the surplus production we sell can help Hynion with hydrogen for their refueling stations so that together we can help reduce carbon dioxide emissions,” says Johan Lundberg, CEO of OKG.
