Worley to work on Framework Bridging Agreement with NEOM’s energy and water company

According to Utilities Middle East, Worley has signed an agreement with ENOWA, the energy, water, and food company of NEOM, to provide engineering and advisory services for the water supply infrastructure that will deliver up to two million cubic meters of desalinated water per day to NEOM, the futuristic city situated in the North-West of Saudi Arabia.

Production of water, brine beneficiation, administration, and storage are all included in the project.

According to Jim Lenton, Group Senior Vice President, Worley, “NEOM intends to deliver a sustainable circular water economy, and we are pleased to be able to use our global expertise to deliver ‘first of a kind’ water solutions that reduce negative environmental effects and align with our purpose of delivering a more sustainable world.”

The desalination process won’t release any salt into the water, and the projects will be fueled by renewable energy, both of which will lessen their negative environmental effects on the Red Sea’s delicate ecosystem.

“This agreement provides the initial steps to revolutionize the water industry towards a truly sustainable and circular solution,” said Gavin van Tonder, Executive Director of ENOWA Water.

In order to convert brine, a byproduct of saltwater desalination, into marketable products such gypsum, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), salt, potassium-based fertilizers, and magnesium, Worley will offer services.

By utilizing the desalination plant’s inevitable brine production, these facilities will contribute to the development of a circular economy for water.

The products made from beneficiated brine will be produced responsibly and have a low carbon footprint, making them valuable in their respective markets.

Both Worley employees from 17 different countries and Advisian, the company’s worldwide consulting arm, will carry out the services.

While Worley will provide FEED, detailed engineering, procurement, and project management services, Advisian will often concentrate on advisory, consultancy, and pre-FEED activities. With this award, Advisian and Worley’s partnership with ENOWA is extended.

It began with feasibility and advisory studies two years ago and has since expanded to six portfolios, including large-scale desalination plants, brine processing, demonstration testing facilities, research and development, and technical/commercial advisory support.

“Water is at the core of sustainable development. It’s critical for healthy ecosystems, for socio-economic progress and to support life itself,” said Steven Whittall, Senior Vice President – Advisian.
