The European Investment Bank provides €35 million to improve water infrastructure in Italy

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and Valle Umbra Servizi have finalized a €35 million pact to enhance the resilience and efficiency of water services across 22 municipalities in the Perugia province.

The EIB’s green loan, designated for projects that significantly contribute to the bank’s climate action and environmental sustainability objectives, will finance a range of specific operations.

These include linking distribution systems, drilling new wells to bolster water supply, broadening the sewer network, and refining wastewater treatment methods.

Such initiatives are expected to reduce water wastage and elevate the quality, efficiency, and sustainability of the services provided in the area.

This initiative marks a significant achievement for Umbria, being the first in the region to receive support from InvestEU,

the European Commission’s programme designed to stimulate over €372 billion in investments across Europe by 2027.

The EIB Group’s involvement in Italy through InvestEU has already produced a substantial economic influence, with total investments amounting to approximately €2.7 billion.

Moreover, the EIB plans to offer complimentary technical support to Valle Umbra Servizi via an existing InvestEU Advisory Hub contract, aiming to craft a decarbonisation strategy aligned with global climate change targets.

EIB Vice-President Gelsomina Vigliotti remarked, “The EIB’s initiative aims to refine water utilization, elevate the quality of water services, and guarantee supply security. This reinforces our position as a principal financier in Italy’s water sector and our advisory services are instrumental in introducing InvestEU resources to Umbria for the first time.”

Eng. Vincenzo Rossi, President of Valle Umbra Servizi, reflected, “The backing from the EIB solidifies our company’s developmental trajectory. The undertaking will foster beneficial economic and environmental impacts, enhancing services across the served region. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to everyone contributing daily to the evolution of our collective corporate ethos.”
