The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy and Space42 Sign Strategic MoU to Advance Geospatial and AI Solutions for Sustainable Energy and Water Management

The signing ceremony was attended by H.E. Dr. Abdulla Humaid Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy. The agreement was executed by H.E. Eng. Shaima Abdulla Al Mulla, Executive Director of Licensing, Compliance and Consumer Protection at the Department of Energy, alongside Mr. Hasan Al Hosani, Chief Executive Officer of Smart Solutions, Space42.

This Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishes a collaborative framework for the DoE and Space42 to share expertise in exploring, developing, and implementing cutting-edge geospatial and AI technologies. The partnership aims to enhance the resilience of Abu Dhabi’s energy and water infrastructure, boost operational efficiency, and promote environmental sustainability.

As part of the agreement, Space42 will assist the Department of Energy by providing managed services that include satellite imagery featuring high-resolution optical, radar (SAR), and thermal data to improve infrastructure monitoring and planning. Additionally, it will offer geospatial AI solutions that facilitate predictive analysis and data-driven decision-making across various sectors.

Collaboration will extend to integrated monitoring systems for electricity, water, district cooling, and related infrastructure utilizing advanced satellite insights; AI-driven simulations for rainwater harvesting and flood resilience; and the application of IoT and AI to analyze real-time data from the DoE’s remote sites and assets.

These initiatives will enhance precise water management by delivering timely insights into soil moisture levels throughout Abu Dhabi, supporting informed decision-making and resource optimization.

The two organizations will investigate potential joint initiatives, pilot projects, and studies to advance sustainable energy and water management within the emirate. The agreement also aims to foster innovation and best practices in utilizing digital, smart, and native AI technologies for monitoring infrastructure and managing resources.

This collaboration strengthens Abu Dhabi’s status as a leader in sustainable and smart energy solutions, aligning with the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and national objectives for climate resilience and water security. The partnership is designed to improve the efficiency of monitoring, forecasting, and operational management across essential energy and water infrastructure.

Her Excellency Eng. Shaima Abdulla Al Mulla stated, “This collaboration with Space42 underscores our commitment to leveraging advanced technologies that support Abu Dhabi’s sustainable development goals. By integrating AI, satellite imagery, and geospatial data, we are creating smart solutions for more efficient resource management, enhancing energy and water efficiency, and advancing infrastructure development.”

Mr. Hasan Al Hosani remarked, “Partnerships are crucial to our strategy to become a global leader in geospatial intelligence, AI platforms, and services. Working with the Department of Energy enables us to harness the potential of space-based data and AI capabilities to further our commitment to smarter, more sustainable urban systems. This MoU signifies a key milestone in our efforts to utilize insights from space to improve situational awareness and operational efficiency across Abu Dhabi’s energy and water ecosystem, fostering resilience and innovation in the Emirate.”
