SSE Commences Construction of Initial Spanish Wind Farm With 64MW Capacity.

SE Renewables, a subsidiary of Scottish energy company SSE, has started building the 64MW Jubera onshore wind farm in Spain, marking the company’s first project in the Spanish onshore wind market. Construction has begun in the La Rioja region, and the wind farm is expected to be operational by the end of 2025.

It will be powered by 11 Nordex wind turbines and is located in Santa Engracia del Jubera. The construction will create 200 full-time direct and indirect jobs.

Finlay McCutcheon, SSE Renewables Europe onshore renewables director, expressed: “Commencing construction on our initial onshore wind project in Spain is a significant milestone for SSE Renewables.

This signifies the initiation of our second onshore project in southern Europe and recognizes the diligent efforts of our southern European team in advancing these projects over recent years. Spain holds a crucial position in SSE Renewables’ market focus.

We are actively advancing a 320MW portfolio of late-stage development projects in Spain, striving to progress them to construction in alignment with the country’s ambitious renewable energy objectives.”

Jubera represents the second project initiated by SSE Renewables following the acquisition of its southern Europe pipeline in 2022.

In September 2023, the company commenced construction on the 28MW Chaintrix-Bierges and Vélye Wind Farm in north-eastern France. In addition to advancing its secured 2.4GW project pipeline in the region, SSE Renewables is also developing 2.5GW of future onshore wind and solar project opportunities.

In December 2023, SSE Renewables secured Section 36 planning consent from the Scottish Government for the 125MW Cloiche wind farm. This wind farm will be constructed alongside the Stronelairg wind farm and the Glendoe hydroelectric project, featuring 29 turbines with a tip height of 149.9m.
