South West Water is introducing cutting-edge leak detection technology throughout the region to address customer leaks directly. The company will distribute 6,000 LeakBots to customers in Devon and Cornwall next month as part of a trial initiative aimed at decreasing leaks. If successful, this trial, spanning six months, may be expanded more broadly.
LeakBots are intelligent devices designed to detect internal leaks within customers’ properties. These devices can be attached to a water pipe near the customer’s internal stop tap to identify continuous water flow within the property, promptly alerting the customer’s smartphone.
David Harris, South West Water’s Drought and Resilience Director, stated: “We are continuously exploring new and inventive methods to reduce leakage across the region, in addition to traditional approaches. As approximately 30% of leaks are typically located on customers’ properties, we greatly rely on our customers’ assistance. LeakBot will empower customers to spot leaks for quick resolution. We are eager to observe the impact of LeakBot.”
South West Water’s deployment of advanced leak detection technology is part of their efforts to diminish leaks in the area and support customers in enhancing water efficiency.
The company is currently identifying and repairing more leaks than ever before, approximately 2,000 per month, utilizing innovative methods such as satellite technology to detect water leaks buried two meters underground, employing drone pilots to access remote areas in Dartmoor and Exmoor, and utilizing detection dogs to locate leaks in challenging terrain.
Craig Foster, Chief Executive Officer at Ondo, the company behind LeakBot, mentioned: “Previous LeakBot trials have resulted in a 60% reduction in water leaks within households. Collaborating with South West Water will enable us to prevent unnecessary water wastage due to domestic leaks across the region. We are excited about deploying the initial 6,000 devices and observing the outcomes.”
