RWE makes investment decision for 1.6GW wind farms in German North Sea

The wind farms, which will be located 50 kilometres offshore in the North Sea, are estimated to generate approximately 6.5 TWh of clean energy each year. RWE, a German utility provider, has made a final investment decision on the Nordseecluster, which consists of four offshore wind projects with a total capacity of 1.6GW.

These wind farms will be located around 50 kilometres north of Juist Island in the North Sea. The project will be carried out in two phases: Nordseecluster A and B, with the first comprising 660MW and the latter adding 900MW. The building of Nordseecluster A at sea is scheduled to begin next year, with some key components already being manufactured. This phase is expected to link all 44 wind turbines to the grid by early 2027.

RWE offshore wind CEO Sven Utermöhlen said: “Our portfolio already includes six offshore wind farms off Germany’s coastlines. The Nordseecluster will add two more. This sends out a good signal for the energy transition in Germany and for RWE.

“With a total capacity of 1.6GW, these wind farms will generate around 6.5TWh of green electricity per year. This will contribute in particular to the decarbonisation of industry in our home market.” The German Federal Network Agency has exempted RWE from lease payments for the Nordseecluster sites.

The Nordseecluster’s green electricity will help RWE’s industrial clients, including AI data centre operators, reduce their carbon footprint through personalised energy solutions. Key suppliers for the Nordseecluster have also been selected. Atlantique Offshore Energy will build two offshore transformer substations, with Hellenic Cables in charge of cable production.

Dajin Offshore will build the wind turbine foundations, with Van Oord handling sea installation. Vestas has been chosen to deliver the V236-15.0 MW wind turbines, which each have a 15MW capacity. Havfram Wind will transport and install the turbines on the vessels ‘Norse Wind’ and ‘Norse Energi.’
