Pacific Green to Develop one of Australia’s Largest Grid-Scale Battery Energy Parks

Pacific Green is a renowned global company that specializes in providing renewable energy solutions. The company is proposing to construct one of the largest grid-scale battery energy parks in Australia. This project will be located in Portland, Victoria, and will be their second battery project in Australia after the first one announced in South Australia in November 2023.

Once operational, the 2.5 GWh Portland Energy Park will significantly support existing and planned renewable energy projects in the Southwest Renewable Energy Zone in Victoria. More broadly, it will strengthen energy supply and price stability for Victorian households and support the state’s transition to net zero energy.

By accelerating the transition to evening renewable energy and replacing more expensive gas generation, Portland Energy Park will reduce total wholesale energy costs for Victorian households by an estimated 3.8%.Taking energy from the park also avoids the emission of approximately 66,900 tons of carbon dioxide per year. Joel Alexander, Managing Director of Pacific Green in Australia, commented:

“We are pleased to announce our second battery energy storage project in Australia. Our mission is to provide critical storage infrastructure to support the transportation network and enable the decarbonization of the energy market. The Portland Energy Park will significantly reduce volatility in Victoria’s wholesale market, thereby lowering prices during the transition to net zero energy. Energy Park is strategically located within Portland’s Industrial Park and close to the Portland Aluminum Smelter and Portland Water Treatment Plant, allowing the development to seamlessly coexist with the existing electrical infrastructure at the site of the proposed project. Pacific Green will develop approximately 30 acres for the proposed energy park. The installation includes four battery parks with a capacity of 250 MW, a 500/33 kV collector, a 500 kV end station and a connection to the existing 500 kV transmission line. No new infrastructure is required outside the project boundaries and impacts on local residents are expected to be minimal, both during construction and once the park is operational.

The Portland Energy Park is currently going through the regulatory approval process and is expected to be constructed in the first half of 2025. The development is the latest phase of Pacific Green’s expansion into Australia, having announced construction plans to begin in 2023.5GW/1.5GWh battery energy park in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia.

Building on its extensive experience delivering storage capacity in the UK, the company aims to accelerate Australia’s transition to renewable energy sources by building a multi-gigawatt platform to be deployed across borders.
