Metro Vancouver is set to award the first significant contract for its biggest capital project yet, the estimated $10 billion replacement for the Iona sewage plant in Richmond.
However, the first contract, $60.6 million for the plant’s preliminary design, estimated construction and operating costs, testing equipment, and consultation fees, only attracted one bidder. Despite that, the committee responsible for overseeing the project has said it is set to recommend the contract to the board on July 26.
Metro staff recommended awarding a $60.6 million contract for the work to a consortium called Fraser Delta Group, led by the companies AECOM and Jacobs Consultancy Canada.
The Iona plant occupies a complex site intersecting human and ecological systems. The project aims to upgrade the facility while undertaking complementary restoration initiatives. These will reconnect the river and sea, create habitats, and regenerate wetlands to mitigate the plant’s historical impacts on the Fraser River Estuary.
