Oman investments in transmission networks to improve water security

Oman’s water authorities are expanding the country’s water transmission networks in order to assure water security, as well as investing in new potable water capacity in important places throughout the country. According to Zawya, these efforts would guarantee security in the event of supply shortages and other calamities.

This initiative, spearheaded by Oman Water and Wastewater Services Company (OWWSC), aims to improve the overall resilience of the country’s potable water infrastructure by investing in new transmission projects, upgrading existing ones, and connecting different water zones.

Independently, Oman Water and Wastewater Services Company (OWWSC) is developing a transmission system capabilities tool that will allow the company to constantly assess the transmission system’s capacity to satisfy water demand growth in a specific location.

OWWSC can use the technology to forecast probable transmission capacity restrictions between the Suhar, Barka, and Muscat water zones, for example. Potential issues raised by the instrument can be addressed collaboratively by OWWSC and Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP), the country’s sole buyer of power and water output.

According to the OPWP, advancements in water transmission networks are being made throughout numerous water areas that comprise the Main Interconnected System (MIS). Interconnectivity has become essential as water transfers from one zone to another have become the norm in the face of escalating demand growth.
