Bengaluru to Launch Asia’s largest water treatment facility.

The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is set to launch Asia’s largest water treatment facility in Thorekadanahalli (TK Halli), situated 95 kilometers from Bengaluru in the Malavalli taluk of Mandya district.

This facility is a crucial part of the extensive Cauvery V Stage project, which aims to supply Cauvery water to 110 villages surrounding Bengaluru.

The plant is designed to provide 775 million liters of drinking water daily (MLD) to Bengaluru, with a total pumping capacity of 2,225 MLD. Valued at Rs 5,550 crore, the project is currently in trial operations and involves transporting water over 95 kilometers from a reservoir that is 7-8 meters deep to an elevation of 920 meters.

BWSSB Chairperson Ram Prasath Manohar mentioned that minor technical issues are being resolved. The facility features machinery from Japan and employs French water treatment technology, both tailored to process water from the Cauvery River.

Water will be pumped to Bengaluru in three phases using pumps rated at 3,500 horsepower (HP) each, capable of lifting 150 MLD. To address the city’s high population density, authorities have expanded pipelines to meet the rising water demand.

Engineers are currently conducting trials to ensure the system functions effectively and can handle the pressure from the 3,500 HP pumps. A junior engineer at TK Halli indicated that hydro tests are being conducted to identify any potential issues in the new pipelines.

Originally slated to commence in March 2023, the Cauvery V Stage Project faced various challenges that caused significant delays. The revised target for project completion is now set for August 2024.
