EIB and ACCIONA Sign €120 Million Loan to Invest in Technological Innovation and Digitalization

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and ACCIONA have finalized a €120 million loan aimed at enhancing research, development, and innovation while furthering the company’s digitalization efforts to create more sustainable and efficient infrastructure. This marks the first installment of a total loan amounting to €150 million that has been approved by the EIB.

The funding from the EIB will allow ACCIONA to progress in developing innovative materials, processes, and technologies across its sectors, including infrastructure, renewable energy, and water treatment, thereby fostering increased sustainability and efficiency. The investment will focus on cutting-edge technological solutions in business operations, process optimization, automation, and decarbonization, alongside cross-sectional projects involving digitalization, robotics, the Internet of Things, data analytics, and applied artificial intelligence.

This financing agreement promotes both digitalization and technological innovation, as well as climate action and environmental sustainability two of the eight key priorities outlined in the EIB Group’s Strategic Roadmap for 2024-2027. In terms of technological innovation, the initiative aligns with the TechEU program, which aims to accelerate EU innovation by mobilizing €250 billion in investments by 2027 for startups, scale-ups, and innovative enterprises throughout Europe.

This latest financing highlights the EIB’s continued commitment to supporting ACCIONA’s research, development, and innovation efforts, building on previous financing arrangements between the two organizations, including a recent agreement from 2022 where the EIB provided €110 million to enhance ACCIONA’s RDI and digitalization initiatives.
