United Utilities Rolls Out New AI Tool to Tackle Storm Overflows

United Utilities is implementing advanced AI technology to enhance its understanding of storm overflow performance.

The water and wastewater provider aims to cut storm overflows by 60% by 2030, leveraging AI to enable quicker and more informed decision-making throughout the process.

For several years, the company has utilized Dynamic Network Management (DNM), an effective system that employs AI and machine learning to analyze data, helping to detect problems like blockages and rising water levels in sewer networks. This allows for proactive measures to be taken before issues affect customers or the environment.

Building on its achievements, United Utilities is now launching the Overflow Investigation Tool, an automated, data-driven system designed to manage all overflow incidents, providing teams with a clearer understanding of events before, during, and after overflow occurrences.

This new tool enhances the existing wastewater system intelligence created through DNM and aims to identify spill causes, discover ways to minimize them, and ensure appropriate actions are taken to resolve issues.

The Overflow Investigation Tool was developed by the company’s newly formed Operational Intelligence Team in wastewater. This team is focused on using data and insights to promote efficient, proactive management of wastewater systems.

Sam Sloan, Head of Operational Intelligence, stated: “This AI-driven strategy marks a significant advancement in our efforts to protect the environment and enhance the services we offer. It focuses on a systems approach to quickly identify root causes, utilizing sophisticated business logic based on real-time data, rainfall patterns, hydraulic modeling, and operational history to initiate investigations and enhance asset performance. By adopting this methodology, we’re not only optimizing our operations but also protecting the environment. I am extremely proud of the team’s commitment and creativity. Their diligent efforts are propelling this transformation forward, and we are just beginning our journey together.”
