Xylem and Amazon Partner on Smart Water Upgrades to Save More Than 1.3 Billion Liters Annually in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (BUSINESS WIRE) Residents of Mexico City and Monterrey are set to benefit from enhanced water supply reliability as both cities initiate significant infrastructure improvements aimed at conserving over 1.3 billion liters of water annually. This initiative is crucial in alleviating the pressures caused by rapid urban growth and ongoing drought conditions that have challenged local water systems.

In collaboration with global water technology leader Xylem (NYSE: XYL) and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), the two cities will implement Xylem Vue, an innovative software platform that utilizes data and analytics to identify leaks, reduce water losses, and enhance the water supply for residents. These projects are projected to save more than 800 million liters of water each year in Mexico City and 560 million liters annually in Monterrey.

“In a region facing water scarcity, recovering over a billion liters of water annually is transformative,” stated Jaime Barba, General Manager of Xylem Vue. “By partnering with Amazon and local water utilities, we leverage data to provide actionable insights that help these cities fortify and secure their water supply.”

In Mexico City, where 9 million residents depend on the municipal water system, as much as 40% of water can be lost due to leaks before reaching consumers. The new technology addresses this by managing pressure in real-time, minimizing leaks, adjusting to demand without straining pipes, and proactively identifying leaks for quicker repairs.

Through these initiatives in collaboration with Amazon and Xylem, the utilities of Mexico City and Monterrey are maximizing their infrastructure investments, ensuring more affordable and dependable water for their communities. A recent study by Xylem and Global Water Intelligence indicated that smart water systems could lower the costs associated with urban drought resilience by up to 20%.

“This significant investment from Amazon, alongside Xylem’s cutting-edge technology, tackles one of our city’s most urgent issues,” remarked Ricardo Alberto Munguía Alfaro, Deputy Secretary of Hydraulic Infrastructure Operations and Efficiency at SEGIAGUA (Mexico City’s Secretariat of Comprehensive Water Management). “This partnership illustrates how public-private cooperation and innovation can lead to substantial improvements in urban water management. Together, we are paving the way for a more sustainable and water-resilient future for Mexico City.”

In Monterrey, the project builds upon a successful implementation of Xylem Vue, expanding to two additional districts, including one that supports low-income residents who are particularly susceptible to supply interruptions. Monterrey will also adopt advanced leak detection technologies, enabling quicker responses and repairs to water loss.

“This pioneering water conservation initiative arrives at a vital moment for our city,” noted Eduardo Ortegon Williamson, Deputy Director of Servicios de Agua y Drenaje de Monterrey. “The technology-focused strategy for minimizing water loss highlights how public-private partnerships can deliver immediate benefits to residents, especially in vulnerable communities most impacted by water shortages.”

The collaboration with Xylem is part of Amazon’s extensive water stewardship initiatives. These new water projects contribute to over 30 global water replenishment efforts announced by Amazon, which are expected to restore more than 14 billion liters of water annually once completed.

By joining forces, the two companies are demonstrating how AI infrastructure can develop responsibly while enhancing water security.

“We understand that tackling water scarcity necessitates collaborative efforts on a global scale,” said Rubén Mugártegui, AWS Mexico Managing Director. “Our investment reflects our dedication to more than just facility maintenance – we are working closely with local municipalities and organizations to develop sustainable solutions for the communities we support.”
