NHPC announces auction results for 500 MW BESS projects in Andhra Pradesh

The outcomes of the 500 MW/1,000 MWh intrastate standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS) procurement (Tranche II) in Andhra Pradesh have been made public by NHPC Limited. For the Jammalamadugu substation, Patel Infrastructure has been given a contract for 225 MW/450 MWh at a monthly rate of Rs 208,000 per MW. For the Ghani substation, ACME Solar has obtained 225 MW/450 MWh at a tariff of Rs 222,000 per MW per month, and for the Kuppam substation, an extra 50 MW/100 MWh at a tariff of Rs 210,000 per MW per month. In February 2025, the tender was put out to bid.

Up to Rs 2.7 million per MWh or 30% of the capital cost, whichever is less, will be made available as viability gap finance support. After the battery energy storage purchase agreement is signed, the BESS projects have to be put into service within 18 months.

The BESS project’s availability for two operating cycles per day must be guaranteed by the developers. It must also fulfill a minimum AC-to-AC round trip efficiency of 85% per month and maintain a minimum system availability of 95% per month.

In order to reduce risks and guarantee on-time commissioning, the developers must also choose commercially proven and functional technologies that are technically in line with the requirements given in the codes and standards.
