Aqualia has chosen Vodafone Spain to provide NB-IoT connectivity for the digitization of the entire water cycle over the next decade, as announced at MWC Barcelona 2024. The initial goal is to deliver over 1 million IoT connections to its water meters within the first 5 years of the agreement. Since the collaboration with Aqualia commenced in October 2022, Vodafone Spain has already linked more than 250,000 meters to its NB-IoT network.
In the upcoming years, Aqualia will introduce a remote metering service to its 3 million users in Spain, enhancing understanding of water usage and efficiency, promoting transparency in water management, and fostering environmental improvements while creating skilled technical jobs.
Vodafone Spain’s IoT Director, Daniel Barallat, emphasized the significance of managing water usage effectively in Spain and highlighted their commitment to aiding Aqualia in conserving natural resources and enhancing water management through advanced technology.
The urban water cycle modernization within the PERTE framework involves digitalizing the water cycle in communities where Aqualia operates, with Vodafone’s assistance as part of the Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE). This initiative aims to optimize the urban water cycle by enhancing efficiency, reducing water losses in distribution systems, and upgrading wastewater treatment facilities.
The Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge has allocated 200 million euros for these projects in the second call for proposals. This funding is projected to leverage an additional 1.7 billion euros of Next Generation public funds, creating approximately 3,500 new job opportunities.
Vodafone has introduced the Vodafone Water Metering solution to address the digitalization needs of water management companies, enabling the digitization of consumption metering processes through smart devices and data analysis tools. A pilot project of Vodafone Water Metering is currently underway in Vigo, facilitating Aqualia’s control over remote metering solutions and ensuring top-notch service for customers.
Key advantages of the Vodafone Water Metering system include detecting fraudulent activities, predicting consumption patterns, identifying leaks promptly, providing real-time consumption information to users, and reducing unregistered water consumption (ANR).
