American Water gains ownership of Navy Station wastewater assets

The utility privatization contract for Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville, Florida is worth approximately $341 million over a 50-year period.

As part of the first utilities privatization contract with the U.S. Navy in the company’s history, American Water today announced that its Military Services Group celebrated a successful transfer of ownership of wastewater utility system assets.

The Naval Station (NS) Mayport in Jacksonville, Florida now belongs to the Military Services Group.

The Defense Logistics Agency, which serves as the Department of Defense’s main contracting body for utility privatization, chose American Water for the NS Mayport contract in July 2022.

The Military Services Group is increasing its footprint for water and wastewater to 18 locations with the inclusion of NS Mayport.

“American Water is honored to officially take ownership of wastewater operations at our first Navy installation,” said Steve Curtis, president of the American Water Military Services Group. “I am very proud of the American Water Military Services transition team for their leadership and for achieving this exceptional accomplishment.”

One of three significant Navy bases in the Jacksonville region, NS Mayport has expanded to become the third-largest fleet concentration location in the country.

Some 32,000 sailors, families, and civilians live there on a daily basis, in addition to the Navy’s 4th Fleet. NS Mayport’s goal is to maintain and improve warfighter readiness.

An annual economic price adjustment will be made to the $341 million total contract value that was awarded on July 1, 2022, over a 50-year period.

On February 28, 2023, a festive ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at NS Mayport, and on March 1, 2023, American Water formally assumed ownership of the assets of the wastewater utility system.
