Voltalia (Euronext Paris, ISIN code: FR0011995588), an international leader in renewable energy, has announced the commencement of commissioning for its 10.5-megawatt biomass power plant in Sinnamary. This new facility complements the existing plants in Kourou (1.7 megawatts) and Cacao (5.1 megawatts), both of which are already operational in French Guiana.
The initial boiler ignitions, a crucial milestone in the commissioning process of the Sinnamary biomass power plant, occurred in early April 2025. This phase marks the start of technical testing. Once fully operational, this biomass power plant will be the largest in French Guiana and will be capable of meeting up to 8% of the territory’s electricity needs.
Situated on the Petit Saut site, the biomass plant boasts an annual production capacity exceeding 80 gigawatt-hours. This project is part of a larger initiative aimed at utilizing local resources and enhancing the diversification and decarbonization of the region’s energy mix.
With the commissioning of the Sinnamary power plant, Voltalia is achieving a significant milestone by doubling its local generation capacity. The company will now have a production capacity that accounts for approximately 16% of the territory’s electricity consumption, thereby reinforcing its role as a key player in the energy transition in French Guiana.
Robert Klein, CEO of Voltalia, stated: “The Sinnamary biomass power plant represents a pivotal moment for French Guiana: it shows that it is feasible to generate low-carbon, reliable, and competitive energy locally, utilizing resources from the territory. With this commissioning, Voltalia is actively contributing to enhancing French Guiana’s energy autonomy and the resilience of its power grid.”
