NTPC, the largest power producer in India, has entered into an agreement with Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) to collaboratively develop a comprehensive roadmap for the company’s shift to cleaner energy sources.
This partnership with SEforALL is designed to align NTPC’s energy strategy with India’s net-zero target for 2070 while also supporting the nation’s development and energy security goals. The transition plan will evaluate various strategic scenarios, investment requirements, and the socio economic effects of moving towards renewable energy.
“Our aim is to foster responsible, sustainable economic development through an energy strategy that champions energy security, social inclusiveness, environmental stewardship, and growth powered by data, technology, and innovation,” stated Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC. “This agreement positions us to meet the rising demand from communities and industry while keeping us at the leading edge of the energy transition.”
The roadmap will enhance NTPC’s ongoing clean energy initiatives, which include green hydrogen pilot projects, floating solar photovoltaic systems, battery storage, pumped storage hydropower, and carbon capture technologies.
Founded in 1975, NTPC has played a crucial role in India’s industrial development. In 2021, it became the first major Indian utility to join a UN Energy Compact, pledging to install 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032. While its capacity is still predominantly thermal-based, the company has significantly increased its renewable energy portfolio and currently provides nearly a quarter of India’s electricity.
“India continues to show climate leadership on the global stage, moving beyond commitment to concrete actions while demonstrating that the energy transition in emerging countries can co-exist alongside economic development,” remarked Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All. “We are excited to support NTPC to co-create a net zero roadmap for the energy giant of India. I laud NTPC for its commitment to transitioning to cleaner energy sources.”
