Largest desalination plant in Philippines to rise in Iloilo.

Metro Pacific Water (MPW) has officially begun building the Metro Iloilo Desalination Facility, set to be the largest desalination plant in the Philippines.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place in Barangay Ingore, La Paz, with notable attendees including Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., Metropac Water Investments Corp. (MPIC) Chairman Manuel Pangilinan, and Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla.

According to MPW, the P5.5-billion facility will have the capacity to convert 66.5 million liters of saltwater into drinking water each day, addressing the growing demand for clean water in Iloilo.

Once fully operational, the plant is projected to deliver a reliable water supply to over 400,000 residents, employing advanced reverse osmosis technology.

MPW President Cristopher Andrew Pangilinan emphasized the company’s commitment to providing sustainable water solutions for communities in Iloilo.

“This cutting-edge and sustainable desalination facility will offer a long-term resolution to Iloilo’s water issues,” he stated.

He also noted that the plant will guarantee a consistent supply of potable water even during droughts or low rainfall periods, lessening reliance on erratic freshwater sources like rivers and groundwater.

With Iloilo’s economic growth, Treñas highlighted the necessity of investing in sustainable infrastructure to cater to the city’s current and future demands.

“Our beloved city is undergoing remarkable growth. Our economy is flourishing, driven by key sectors like BPOs and tourism, while our population keeps increasing. However, with growth come significant challenges—especially in ensuring a stable and sustainable water supply for our communities,” he remarked.”This facility will ensure that as Iloilo City continues to expand, we can provide a reliable and steady water supply for all residents,” he added.

The desalination plant is a collaborative effort between MPW, the consortium of SUEZ, and Jemco.

MPW, a subsidiary of MPIC, focuses on water and wastewater infrastructure projects beyond Metro Manila and throughout Asia. SUEZ, a France-based firm with over 50 years of expertise in water and waste management, will manage the construction and operation of the facility. Meanwhile, Jemco, a prominent local construction company, will partner with SUEZ on the project’s development.
