Japan and Jordan signed agreements to provide 1.334 billion Japanese yen (around $8.7 million) for a SCADA water supply system in the Ma’an governorate of Jordan. This financial assistance will be facilitated through the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
Central to the project is a SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system that employs sensors and devices to oversee and manage water networks. The agreements were signed by Jordan’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Zeina Toukan, and the Japanese ambassador to Amman, Asari Hideki. Additionally, JICA Jordan’s chief representative, Morihata Shingo, signed another grant agreement during a separate ceremony attended by Minister of Water and Irrigation, Raed Abu Soud.
According to a statement from Jordan’s Ministry of Water, the initiative aims to boost the operational and management efficiency of water supply facilities in Ma’an. It will enhance water services in the southern governorate while tackling issues related to water loss.
Toukan expressed gratitude for Japan’s continuous support, noting its alignment with Jordan’s Economic Modernization Vision. She highlighted the strong bilateral ties between Jordan and Japan and their mutual commitment to expanding cooperation in various fields, as reported by Petra.
Hideki similarly reiterated Japan’s dedication to aiding Jordan through financial and technical initiatives, emphasizing that these programs will strengthen the kingdom’s water sector. He also commended Jordan as a regional example of economic and political reforms, according to Petra.
Shingo emphasized the significance of the project, especially considering Jordan’s position as one of the most water-scarce nations globally. He mentioned that JICA is also undertaking a technical cooperation project focused on improving water-loss management in the southern governorates, particularly aimed at building capacity for engineers and technicians.
