Innovative Biofiltration With Filtralite® at Bekkelaget WWTP
Thanks to its distinctive porosity, Filtralite® Clean creates ideal conditions for biofilm development and promotes efficient water flow through the filter bed, enhancing the retention and removal of contaminants.
Background
Bekkelaget Wastewater Treatment Plant (BWL) in Oslo, Norway, is one of the most advanced facilities of its kind, serving over 300,000 people. With growing urban demands and increasingly strict environmental regulations, the plant faced a pressing challenge: how to significantly reduce total phosphorus and organic pollutants before discharging treated water into the Oslofjord.
The Challenge
To comply with national discharge limits, BWL needed an efficient, low-footprint post-treatment solution that could handle high volumes while ensuring excellent water quality — especially under variable seasonal and hydraulic conditions.
The Filtralite® Solution
The plant adopted a compact biofiltration system utilizing Filtralite® Clean and Filtralite® Pure filter media. These expanded clay-based materials are known for their high porosity, enhanced biofilm growth, and excellent solids retention capabilities.
Key features of Filtralite® media include:
- Improved removal of organic matter and nutrients
- Superior hydraulic performance
- Reduced need for chemical dosing
- Durable, long-lasting filter media
Outstanding Results
Since its installation, the Filtralite® biofilter has delivered stable and compliant effluent — even during winter months and peak loads. The system has proven not only effective but also highly cost-efficient, helping BWL meet environmental targets with minimized operational complexity.
A Model for the Future
The success of Filtralite® at BWL sets a benchmark for other wastewater treatment facilities looking to upgrade performance without extensive reconstruction. With rising environmental pressures, smart filtration solutions like Filtralite® represent the future of sustainable water management.
