Iberdrola España commissions a new substation in Plaza de España

I-DE, Iberdrola España’s distributor, has successfully commissioned the first connections supplying distribution centers from the newly constructed substation in the Plaza España underground passages.

This substation, designed to transform voltage from the main’s 132 kV to the distribution grid’s 15kV, will power 26 strategically located distribution centers across Madrid’s capital.

The ‘connection circuits’ are routed along Madrid’s most significant streets, linking the Plaza España substation with these distribution centers.

The connectors, which became operational in December, now supply power to distribution centers on Montera, Gran Vía, and Segovia. In 2026, additional iconic areas such as Paseo del Prado and Mayor will follow suit.

These new power connections enable the company to enhance the quality of supply for customers in these areas, which include some of Spain’s most emblematic theaters, shops, churches, fountains, and hotels. Notably, these locations experience increased electricity demand during Christmas due to holiday lights and decorations.

Project Challenges
The permitting and paperwork for this project were particularly complex due to the involvement of multiple administrations in such unique and historically significant areas.

Executing the work was also exceptionally challenging, as it had to be carried out amidst the daily flow of pedestrians and vehicles in Madrid’s downtown area, all while maintaining the company’s high safety standards.

Another significant challenge was the careful replacement of pavement materials where the pipes were laid, such as the heavy granite slabs in Plaza de España and the historic cobblestones on Cuesta de la Vega, located near Madrid’s old Arab wall. All materials were meticulously removed to ensure their reuse as much as possible.
