Iberdrola commissions the Canada-US interconnection to supply almost 10% of Massachusetts’ electricity needs

The New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) transmission network, commissioned by Iberdrola through its US subsidiary Avangrid, is a strategic infrastructure project linking the United States and Canada. This 233-kilometer line carries hydroelectric power from Quebec, enhancing the security and quality of supply while lowering energy costs in New England.

By promoting the electrification of New England, NECEC strengthens the reliability of the electricity system and aids in reducing energy expenses, thereby improving competitiveness and fostering economic development for households and businesses in the region.

Initiated in 2018, the project has been completed following the acquisition of all necessary federal and state permits and authorizations. NECEC has commenced transporting hydroelectric power from Quebec via a high-voltage line spanning 233 kilometers and boasting a capacity of 1,200 MW, which is sufficient to supply nearly 10% of Massachusetts’ total electricity consumption.

This line represents an investment of $1.65 billion and features regulated and stable 40-year contracts with Massachusetts distributors and Hydro-Québec.

Promoting Technological Innovation and Social Responsibility

The project integrates advanced technology, including the HVDC converter system, which enables efficient electricity transmission over long distances and connects asynchronously operating networks. At the Buxton substation in Maine, two STATCOMs, power electronic devices that maintain voltage and enhance supply quality, have been installed with a capacity of 300 MVAR, playing a crucial role in ensuring grid balance during peak demand periods.

The positive impact of NECEC directly benefits local communities and the regional economy, contributing hundreds of millions of dollars to community initiatives and programs.

Throughout all phases of the project, a strong commitment to environmental protection has been maintained, including securing approximately 20,200 hectares to safeguard the region’s ecosystems.
