Microsoft and Iberdrola have announced an expanded collaboration to accelerate joint projects in energy and artificial intelligence (AI). This partnership builds on their previous successes and includes two new long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) in Spain, marking the first such agreements between the two companies in Europe.
Cloud and AI Integration:
Iberdrola will further adopt Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, Copilot AI tools, and security solutions to enhance its digital capabilities and drive AI adoption across the Group. The company has already migrated critical business systems to Azure, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and operational resilience.
Renewable Energy Commitments:
– The new PPAs cover 150 MW of wind power from the Iglesias (Burgos) and El Escudo (Cantabria) wind farms in Spain, supporting Microsoft’s goal of 100% renewable energy usage in Europe.
– These add to three existing PPAs in the U.S. (via Iberdrola’s subsidiary Avangrid) for Powell Creek Solar (Ohio), Camino Solar (California), and Juniper Canyon Wind (Washington), bringing the total contracted capacity to 500 MW across both regions.
Future Collaborative Opportunities:
The alliance will explore innovations like:
– Renewable energy supply chains
– Waste heat utilization (e.g., from data centers in Zaragoza)
– Electrification projects, carbon credits, hydrogen, battery storage, and other clean energy solutions across Iberdrola’s global operations (Europe, U.S., Brazil, Australia).
Samer Abu-Ltaif, President of Microsoft for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, emphasized:
“This partnership with Iberdrola is a strong commitment to speeding up the energy transition and digital transformation in the industry. By combining Iberdrola’s leadership in renewable energy with Microsoft’s cutting edge cloud and AI technologies, we’re not only advancing our sustainability goals, but we’re also driving innovation and resilience for our customers and communities. Together, we’re setting a new standard for how technology and energy can drive positive change at scale.”
This partnership will accelerate the adoption of AI across the Iberdrola Group to strengthen our leading digital capabilities and expand our renewable PPA portfolio with Microsoft, in line with both companies’ strong commitment to combining major growth in electricity consumption with full decarbonization.
We’re pleased to announce the signing of our first two PPAs in Europe, expanding our global partnership’, said Aitor Moso, director of Iberdrola’s global customer business.
