Harnessing Two Types of Filtralite® Pure Media at Gäddvik DWTP (Sweden)
Filtralite® Pure is a high-performance filter media designed for drinking water treatment. With its unique porosity and lightweight structure, it enables efficient removal of contaminants such as iron, manganese, and ammonia while ensuring superior water clarity.
Project Overview
Gäddvik Drinking Water Treatment Plant, situated near Luleå, Sweden, was designed between 2013 and 2015 to serve approximately 65,000 residents. The plant utilizes groundwater that is artificially replenished through a process of pre-filtration and infiltration.
Filtration Strategy: Pre-Filtering & Groundwater Recreation
Surface water from the Luleå River undergoes pre-filtration through rapid filters filled with Filtralite® Mono-Multi media before infiltration. Each filter bed spans a depth of 2 meters and operates at a rate of 15 m/h, reducing turbidity from 2 NTU down to 0.5–0.6 NTU. Although flocculation is not usually necessary before filtration, the system is designed to support it if needed.
Final Filtration and Polishing
Post-infiltration, the newly formed groundwater is treated in eight additional Filtralite® Mono-Multi filter beds. These final filters also have a 2-meter depth and function at a lower rate of 5 m/h, achieving further turbidity reductions—down to a remarkable 0.02–0.03 NTU. Backwashing occurs every six days. Upstream of these filters, the water’s pH and alkalinity are adjusted using lime and carbonic acid; disinfectant and UV treatment are applied downstream.
Why It Works
-
Deep filter beds & high-porosity media: Filtralite’s dual-media design maximizes filtration depth and driving force, effectively lowering turbidity in both surface water and filtered groundwater.
-
Efficient performance: Extended filter runs—with backwash cycles spaced six days apart—highlight the media’s longevity and filtration stability.
-
Versatile filtration: Effective across both pre-filtration and polishing stages, the solution demonstrates flexibility and high efficacy.
-
Superior water clarity: Achieving final turbidity as low as 0.02–0.03 NTU ensures compliance with demanding drinking water standards.
