Filtralite® Cuts Down up to 50% of Phosphorus and Solids—Powering Cleaner Results at Finland’s Third-Largest Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Kakolanmäki Wastewater Treatment Plant – A Modern and Efficient Facility
Built inside the rock of Kakolanmäki and operated by Turun seudun puhdistamo Oy, this state-of-the-art plant serves 14 municipalities and treats wastewater from nearly 300,000 residents and surrounding industries in the Turku region.
Since its launch in 2009, the plant has replaced five older facilities. With a 2,000+ km sewer network and over 500 pump stations, it handles 90,000 m³/day of wastewater with outstanding energy efficiency — thanks to an integrated heat pumping station, the plant produces 10 times more energy than it consumes.
Advanced Treatment Process
The facility uses a quadruple-line system combining mechanical, chemical, and biological treatment, achieving:
-
99% removal of organic matter, phosphorus, and solids
-
Over 80% removal of nitrogen
Final polishing is performed via 20 filtration tanks, each containing:
-
0.5 m of quartz sand
-
1 m of Filtralite® Clean MC 2.5–4, totaling 1,000 m³ supplied by Leca (Norway)
Sustainable Solutions
-
Cleaned water is safely released into the Turku Linnanaukko harbour basin
-
Dried sludge is processed at Gasum Oy’s biogas plant
-
Recovered heat is reused for district heating and cooling
Our polishing filters remove half of the amount of phosphorus and solids.
There has been no need yet to replace the Filtralite layer.
