Filtralite® Contributes to a Cleaner Mediterranean in Malta
Thanks to its distinctive porous structure, Filtralite® Clean provides ideal conditions for biofilm development and efficient water flow through the filter bed, enhancing the capture and removal of contaminants.
Filtralite® Clean Helps Keep the Mediterranean Sea Clean
Location: Ta’ Barkat Wastewater Treatment Plant, Malta
Product Used: Filtralite® Clean as a biofilter media in Biological Aerated Filters (BAFs)
Background
In 2005, only 6.4% of Malta’s domestic wastewater was being treated. This posed a major environmental risk, particularly for the Mediterranean Sea, which is highly sensitive to pollution due to its limited water exchange.
The Challenge
-
Rapidly improve wastewater treatment capacity and efficiency.
-
Find a solution that supports both biological treatment and suspended solids removal.
-
Ensure long-term performance with low operational and maintenance costs.
The Solution
The Ta’ Barkat plant adopted Filtralite® Clean, an advanced expanded clay media with high porosity, specifically engineered for biofiltration applications. It was used in Biological Aerated Filters (BAFs) to optimize both mechanical and biological filtration.
Results
-
The implementation of Filtralite® Clean played a key role in dramatically improving wastewater treatment in Malta.
-
It significantly reduced the environmental impact of untreated wastewater and helped preserve the cleanliness of the Mediterranean Sea.
-
The Ta’ Barkat plant became a showcase for sustainable, high-efficiency wastewater treatment in coastal regions.
