Filtralite® Clean Powers Efficient Wastewater Treatment in Dalian, China

To meet strict discharge standards, the Dalian WWTP (serving 432,000 residents) upgraded its biological treatment system using Filtralite® Clean filter media in two Biofor® stages — one for BOD and SS removal, the other for nitrification.

Filtralite® Clean is applied in a fixed-bed system for wastewater treatment

The process begins with primary sedimentation in four tanks using lamella separators. Biological treatment follows in two stages:

  • The first removes organic matter and suspended solids using 12 Biofor filters filled with Filtralite® Clean HR 3–6, a round expanded clay aggregate that supports biofilm growth.
  • The second stage involves nitrification, also carried out in 12 Biofor filters (same surface area) using Filtralite® Clean HC 2.5–5 as the filter media.

Both filter types receive process air via blowers to maintain aerobic conditions.

Approximately 40% of the treated water is chlorinated and reused for industrial purposes.

Results

  • BOD₅ reduced from 216 mg/L to 3 mg/L

  • COD dropped from 480 mg/L to 30 mg/L

  • SS cut from 350 mg/L to 8 mg/L

  • NH₄-N brought down to 1.1 mg/L
